Utility Security Deposits can tie up several thousands of dollars but are not always needed.

When setting up a new account, utilities routinely request tens of thousands of dollars as a security deposit against future customer non-payment or bankruptcy. Amounts are based on estimated consumption. In reality such security deposits are negotiable using particular precedents. AWL has negotiated the waiving of substantial security deposits from coast to coast. In one such example unnecessary deposits of $24,000 were waived.
